Happy Anniversary, Nearzenith

“Hey, have you got your passport?”

After greetings like this going on in the office for nearly a month, we started our trip to Cambodia.

My curiosity was well aroused as it was my first time of taking part in our company’s organized tour, and the first time the company celebrated its anniverssary in a foreign country. Coincidentally, we arrived in Cambodia right after President Xi’s two-day visit in the country’s capital.

We, however, landed in Siem Reap, one of the 51 places you must visit before dying, as those who like to make such a list claim.

The Royal Gardens

The Royal Gardens, or the Royal Crusade for Independence Gardens, is located besides the royal residence – Cambodian king’s pied-a-terre in Siem Reap. The garden is a restful place more like a big backyard hotel garden – more peaceful than grandiose. We were awed by the towering trees that run north-south and drawn by the vast colony of giant fruit bats that hang pendulously from every bough.

At the end of the tree-lined avenue is the small, open-sided Preah Ang Chek Preah Ang Chom Temple, where endless streams of pilgrims came to worship the sisterly gods, who are said to be the town’s spirit guardians. In a lively atmosphere of clouds of incense swirling around worshippers, newly wedded couples were seen worshipping the gods and having their prenuptial or after-wedding photo shoots taken in the garden.

Our guide didn’t step into the temple. Instead, he bowed to the sisterly gods from outside. Asked why he didn’t join the worshipers into the temple, he said that Buddha is always in his heart, no matter where he is.

Banteay Srei, Angkor Wat

Buddha sculptures and statues, deity carvings are found everywhere in the ancient architectural complex in Banteay Srei. The Sunshine filters through the tree leaves, revealing the past glories of Angkor Kingdom in its hey days. The temple is completely made up of stones, with almost each stone carved with exquisite paintings. The delicate and fine stone carvings are beautiful filigree relief work, breathtakingly recreating things of the past. The craftsmen in the 1st century were able to carve hard stones into many-layered fine arts with delicate lines. Their attentiveness into detail in the door header, wall and window frames made their way to the peak of Cambodian art –- considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of Angkorian art. I can’t help but wonder if we were able to work conscientiously and meticulously in everything we do just as these craftsmen, couldn’t we also accomplish some great work?

The Tonlé Sap

The Tonle Sap, located in the lower Mekong Basin, is the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia and is called Cambodia’s beating heart. Villagers living in the stilted houses or floating home build floatingschools, floating clinics, as well as a floating police station on the water. People in these floating village communities make a living on what the lake provides. They wash, bathe, swim and fish in it. Travelling in one of the most disadvantageous places in the world such as this, we found we are so materially better off.

Beng Mealea

Some of the carvings in Beng Mealea depicted scenes and stories in Buddihism. Unfortunately, must of the architectures inside the temple complex were unrestored. Due to lack of record, the temple’s history is untraceable, leaving tourists a mysterious atmosphere. Giant trees and thick brush are thriving above huge stones lying in great heaps. While the amazing mounds of rubbles made travellers stop and gasp, the temple ruin in the jungle became film directors’ ideal shooting places for adventures films.

Gathering in moonlit night

The night after our trip was almost finished, we gathered beside the hotel swimming pool, with beers, fruits and snacks surrounding us. In the quiet night, breezes rippled the pool water, in which the moon was reflected. Celebrations for the 16 years anniversaries of Nearzenith were being held, with laughter, stories and jokes being shared among us colleagues.

We returned to the little balcony in the hotel room, enjoying the view of traditional Cambodianbungalows stretching faraway, their blue or red roofs against the white walls.

The sight reminded me of one of Su Shi’s poems in which he depicted his once late night trip with his friend. “Which night has no moon? Which place has no bamboos or cypress? But it isn't easy to find people so relaxed like us.”

With no signal for phone calls or wi-fi, we were kind of cut off from the outside world. However, we felt quite at ease as the whole company was there. As it is said, it is not where you go, it’s who you go with. The leisure time we spent here belongs to each of us, as well as to the whole group while we enjoyed the landscape.

As autumn changed into winter and we’ve been back for months, I still remember the scene of motorbikes roaring past along the road in Cambodia, raising a cloud of dust, as well as the golden-colored roof spires under the moonlight. It was like a dream.

I miss the coconut juice we drank every day in Cambodia, miss the young tour guide of Khmer-Cantonese-Fujianese mixed race, miss the chili sauce we used to mix into the local dishes in Cambodia,so red and so hot. Happy anniversary, Nearzenith.
